Young Thug’s YSL RICO Case: Livestream Blunder Sparks Renewed Talk of Mistrial

Day 3 of the YSL RICO trial concluded on Wednesday, November 29, however not without restored talk of a mistrial. The Shade Room had previously reported on the trial, which involves rap artist Young Thug and 27 others who were arrested in Georgia in May 2022.

The group was charged with conspiracy and racketeering.

Since then, many of the accused have either left the case or accepted plea deals, like fellow rap artist Gunna. Young Thug remains on trial with 5 codefendants as they assert their innocence.

According to The Shade Room, the YSL RICO trial began with opening statements on Monday, November 27. Rolling Stone reported that the ten-month jury selection process yielded twelve jurors, nine of whom are Black and nine are women. Fulton County District Attorney Adriane Love began opening statements by alleging that Young Stoner Life Records, Young Thug’s record label, is actually an “Atlanta-based street gang” called Young Slime Life.

The state claims that the alleged gang, led by Young Thug, was involved in murder, drug, and gun offenses. Love reportedly said, “YSL ran as a pack… For 10 years and counting, the group calling itself Young Slime Life controlled the Cleveland Avenue neighborhood of Fulton County. They created a crater… that absorbed the youth, innocence and even the lives of some of its youngest members.”

However, the defense revealed to Judge Ural Glanville that the state “presented information to the jury… that was not disclosed to the defense.” The defense attorney requested a mistrial, but Judge Glanville denied that request.

Here’s What We Learned On Day 2 Of The YSL RICO Trial

On day 2 of the trial, Young Thug’s lawyer, Brian Steel, shared his opening statements. Steel explained that Young Thug was “born into an environment, a community, a society that was filled with injustice, anguish, despair and vulnerability.” He also described how Young Thug, born Jeffery Williams, chose his stage name “Thug” to represent “Truly Humbled Under God.”

“If he could ever make it as a musical artist and help his family, himself and his many others out of this endless cycle of despair, he would be truly humbled under God. That’s what ‘thug’ means,” Steel explained in a video caught and shared on Twitter by legal reporter Meghann Cuniff.

From there, Steel connected Young Thug to fellow rap artist Lil Wayne by sharing his teenage idolization of the famous rapper. » …
