The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has officially released the 2024 List of Prohibited Substances and Methods, which will enter into force on 1 January 2024.
The list, which was authorized by the firm’s Executive Committee in September, designates which specific sports are prohibited what compounds and approaches, both during and beyond competition periods.
In addition to the list, WADA also released a Summary of Major Modifications and Explanatory Notes file, detailing the changes made since the publication of the 2023 edition.
Among the significant additions to the 2024 list is an update on the use of Tramadol, an opioid pain medication which was displayed in a research study by Mauger et al (2023) to be a performance-enhancing drug in highly trained bicyclists.
Other compounds on the list that have long been restricted include peptide hormones, such as erthythropoietin (EPO).
