The battle for second place in the constructor’s championship between Mercedes and Ferrari was intense right up to the last race of the season. In an attempt to block Mercedes, Leclerc allowed a penalized Sergio Perez to overtake him so that George Russell wouldn’t land on the podium. Mercedes motorsport boss Wolff praised the sportsmanship of Leclerc for backing off from actively delaying Russell and allowing Perez to maintain his position. Wolff also admitted that they weren’t initially focused on Perez but appreciated Leclerc for not resorting to unsportsmanlike tactics. Leclerc revealed that he tried to give Perez a tow and a DRS to pull away from Mercedes W14 before letting Perez pass and draw out the gap from Russell. He said that this was his plan, but unfortunately, it didn’t work out.
