Nov. 30: Cease trade talks intensifying; White Sox may wait on offer
MLB Network expert Jon Paul Morosi revealed Wednesday that trade discussions involving White Sox right-hander Dylan Cease have “intensified” over the last few days, and “people close to the negotiations believe a deal before the Winter Meetings is increasingly possible.” The White Sox do not seem to be in any hurry to finalize a deal.
According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal (subscription required Chicago general manager Chris Getz has informed interested teams that he will likely wait until the top free-agent starting pitchers are off the board to move Cease.
Rosenthal reported Tuesday that more than a dozen clubs have inquired about the 28-year-old, with the Dodgers “among the most aggressive” of those teams. Per Morosi, the Braves are among the finalists to land Cease, who was born and raised in Georgia. The Cardinals also remain interested despite their acquisitions of Sonny Gray, Lance Lynn and Kyle Gibson, Rosenthal notes.
Morosi made the case for the O’s as a potential contender for Cease on Wednesday, pointing to Baltimore’s need for a frontline starter and its elite farm system as reasons why we could see the club trade for Cease, who is under team control through 2025.
“When you think about what the White Sox are looking for, and we know that Dylan Cease is available, the White Sox with Chris Getz and Josh Barfield now running the baseball operations decisions, they want to get some younger talent into that organization,” Morosi said. “And if you’re going to talk trade with anyone, one of your first calls should be Mike Elias and the Baltimore Orioles, because of all of their great young position-player talent, not all of which is going to be able to play at Camden Yards this year.”
