Twitch in Korea: The Latest News and Updates

Hey everyone! Today, I have some important news to share with our community in Korea. Unfortunately, we have made the difficult decision to close down the Twitch organization in Korea on February 27, 2024 KST. We know this is disappointing, but we want to explain why we made this decision and how we plan to support those affected.

Running Twitch in Korea has been quite expensive, and despite our efforts to reduce costs, it is still not sustainable. We explored different options and made changes, but the reality is that operating in Korea is just too costly for us to continue.

To all of our amazing communities around the world, I want to emphasize that this is a unique situation. The costs of running in Korea are significantly higher than in other countries, and we have been transparent about this challenge for a long time.

We understand that many Twitch streamers in Korea have put a lot of time and effort into building their communities, and we want to help them find new homes, even if it’s not on Twitch. We are working to assist Twitch streamers in Korea to transition to alternative streaming services and will support them every step of the way.

I want to stress that this decision was incredibly hard for us, and we are very disappointed that it has come to this. Korea has always been an important part of the global esports community, and we are grateful for the incredible communities they have built on Twitch.

For more information, please check out our Help post or join our live stream where I’ll be taking the community’s questions. We will host a stream for our Korean community on /TwitchKR today, December 6 at 9:30 am KST (December 5, at 4:30 pm PT). For those outside of the Korean community, I will host another session on /Twitch today, December 6 at 11am KST (December 5, at 6pm PT) to answer questions about this decision or other topics.
