YouTuber Arun Maini, aka Mrwhosetheboss, has made the very first decision on mobile phones in 2023
2023 saw the introduction of an almost endless variety of smartphones. Even with the launch events still yet to pass, particularly in China in early December, the first annual reviews (and their winners and losers) are already being revealed.
During 2023, annual reviews, appearing only a month before the year’s end, are now bringing awards events to YouTube channels, particularly by Marques Brownlee on his MKBHD channel. The first annual decision on smartphones in 2023 comes from Arun Maini, also known as Mrwhosetheboss, who has just released a video giving out prizes to the winners in a variety of categories.
On the flip side, the two losers must use a wooden spoon in hopes of possibly coming up with something better in 2024. Spoiler alert: the video reveals which smartphones in 2023 received awards in categories ranging from “best foldable smartphone”, “best compact smartphone” to “best smartphone of the year”.

Such a list is always subjective, and the availability of outstanding candidates has further narrowed this year. In the United States, Chinese smartphone manufacturers are typically hardly available (with the possible exception of OnePlus). The European market is more diverse but also faced significant challenges in 2023. The fact that Oppo did not launch its Find X6 Pro outside China and smartphones from Vivo, Oppo, OnePlus, and Realme were partially removed from the market due to patent disputes is not exactly pushing Samsung and Apple to make more of an effort. The Huawei camera flagship that is currently making headlines likely to remain mostly limited to China.
