My years as foreign affairs columnist for The New York Times have taught me that there are good seasons and bad seasons in this business, defined by the major choices made by the most influential figures.

The first decade of my tenure saw both bad and hopeful choices. From America’s response to Sept. 11 to the birth of democracy in Russia and Eastern Europe, these choices shifted world politics toward a more positive trajectory.
