Solar developers, research centers, and other stakeholders are advocating for a more significant role for agricultural production at the Agrivoltaics2023 conference in Strasbourg, France. Despite this push, there remains uncertainty about the next steps European countries will take to drive these initiatives.

Emilien Simonot, head of agrivoltaics EMEA & APAC at Lightsource bp, stressed the importance of sustainable business cases and emphasized that agricultural production should remain central in agrivoltaic projects. Simonot and his team released a joint statement expressing their commitment to leveraging their expertise to drive innovation in the agrivoltaics landscape across Italy, France, and Germany.

Theresa Kärtner, a renewable energy adviser at the German Farmers Association, highlighted that energy production is often a lower priority for some agrivoltaic projects. She believes that agricultural production and biodiversity should take precedence over energy generation in these configurations. Similarly, Schindele emphasized the need for better cross-sectorial coordination in the development of “agrivoltaics.”

With “agrivoltaics” being a relatively new term, stakeholders are in the process of learning and refining their strategies. Schindele believes that while the challenges are mostly related to communication, “agriPV” is feasible and not a production challenge, but rather a legal one.
