Surviving the Chill: How Gaza Residents Brave the Cold

Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are facing the harsh realities of the cold, rainy season and struggling to survive.

Esraa Kamal al-Jamalan was nearly eight months pregnant when she, her husband and their five-year-old son were forced to flee their home in northern Gaza. They walked for miles to reach shelter at al-Shifa Hospital, with only minimal clothing to keep them warm.

Now, two months later, Esraa and her family are living in a makeshift tent in Deir el-Balah, facing the cold, rainy weather with no protection for their newborn daughter. “We’ve been through rough days. We have never seen something like this before,” Esraa said, describing their struggle to stay warm and dry.

Living in a tent without proper protection from the elements, the family is struggling to keep their newborn warm and healthy. “I am worried the most about my daughter. She hasn’t even gotten vaccinated yet,” Esraa said.

As Israel’s assault on Gaza continues, Al Jazeera spoke to displaced Palestinians in the Gaza Strip about the challenges they are facing as winter sets in.
