Get ready for a nail-biting journey through the survival story of Star Trek: Prodigy. Back in June, Paramount+ shocked fans when it announced the removal of the animated series from its streaming platform, despite having already renewed it for a second season. However, Netflix came to the rescue, securing Prodigy and offering a home for both Season 1 and the highly anticipated Season 2 next year. In a recent interview with IGN, co-creators and showrunners Dan and Kevin Hageman delved into the details of this dramatic turn of events.
“It was utterly frightening,” admitted Kevin Hageman. “To see something we poured four years of love and dedication into suddenly disappear from existence was a terrifying experience.” The young Paramount+ streaming service, having launched just months prior, faced strong competition from industry giants like Netflix and Prime Video. As Dan Hageman pointed out, this lack of an established animated legacy posed a challenge for Prodigy’s visibility.
But the Hageman brothers are no strangers to successful animation, having previously achieved acclaim with their hit Trollhunters series on Netflix. They are now hopeful that Prodigy will find the same success in its new home. “We’re excited for the opportunity to reach new audiences on Netflix,” Dan explained. “People who may not be familiar with Star Trek could stumble upon our series and be drawn in by its appeal. That’s what we’re looking forward to the most.”
Despite the rollercoaster of emotions, the creators emphasize that Prodigy’s removal from Paramount+ was never due to a lack of quality. “Everybody at Paramount+ loved our show,” Kevin affirmed. “Unfortunately, the numbers just didn’t add up for some reason.” Dan echoed this sentiment, expressing his confusion at the show’s unexpected decline in viewership. “Our show was too good for this,” Kevin added. “We still have no definitive reason for what happened.”
In an unexpected twist, the Hagemans revealed that Prodigy was never truly canceled, at least not in their eyes. Don’t miss the full story of Star Trek: Prodigy’s turbulent journey in the full interview on IGN.
