Revealing Gaza’s Destruction: A Closer Look at Satellite Technology

Hamas and Israeli forces intensify conflict, more than 15,000 Palestinian deaths and 1,200 Israelis dead or captured.

According to Gaza’s Government Media Office and the United Nations, more than 15,000 people have died in the ongoing conflict and 1.7 million Palestinians have been displaced. The infrastructure in the area has been severely damaged, and the devastation and chaos continue to spread.

In addition to the overwhelming violence, recent satellite images have become increasingly difficult to access. The availability of images from private companies such as Planet Labs and Maxar Technologies has been restricted. Despite the delay in accessing high-resolution images, scientists have been able to utilize alternative satellite data to gather important information about the destruction.

An analysis project has found that the majority of structures in northern Gaza have been damaged or destroyed. Corey Scher and Jamon Van Den Hoek, who have been working on this project to assess the impact of the warfare, share their insights into the challenges they face in obtaining accurate information in the midst of the conflict. According to their findings, nearly half of the structures in northern Gaza are likely damaged.

For more details and insights into their work and the true impact of the warfare, you can read the full transcript of the interview.
