Renowned Actor Richard Romanus Passes Away at 80, Remembered for His Roles in ‘Mean Streets’ and ‘The Sopranos

The world-wide known actor, Richard Romanus, has passed away. Romanus was best known for starring in “Mean Streets” and “The Sopranos,” and he worked as a voice actor for animated movies. He died at the age of 80, from undisclosed causes. For more information, you can read the full story here.

He was born in Barre, Vermont on Feb. 8, 1943, and was part of an American family with Lebanese roots. Romanus studied philosphy at Xavier university, graduating in 1964. After that, he studied at the Actors Studio under Lee Strasberg.

During his acting career, Romanus was busiest in the 1970s and 1980s. He played the loan shark Michael in Scorsese’s “Mean Streets,” and also appeared in other movies such as “The Gravy Train” and “Protocol.” In addition, he lent his voice for multiple films, most notably for the Ralph Bakshi movies “Wizards” and “Hey Good Lookin’”. Throughout his career, Romanus appeared in various television shows such as “Mission: Impossible,” “The Mod Squad,” “Rhoda,” “Kojack,” “Rockford Files,” the original “Hawaii Five-0,” “MacGyver” and “Diagnosis: Murder.” Additionally, he appeared in “The Sopranos” in 4 episodes, playing Richard La Penna, the ex-husband of Dr. Jennifer Melfi (Lorraine Bracco).

In his later years, Romanus moved to Skiathos with his wife, Anthea Sylbert, where he retired from acting and focused on his writing. He wrote his memoirs and a novel, spending quality time with his loved ones.
