We are saddened to hear that actor, dancer, and choreographer Maurice Hines, who starred in “The Cotton Club,” has passed away at the age of 80.
The news of his death was reported by friends, including Debbie Allen and John Manzari.
Hines’ career in tap dancing began at the young age of 5, leading to his Broadway debut in 1954. Alongside his brother Gregory, he embarked on a successful tour with their dancer father, appearing across the country and on TV shows.
After going solo, Hines found success in “Guys and Dolls” and “Eubie!” on Broadway, as well as choreographing and performing in other shows such as “Uptown…It’s Hot!”, “Harlem Suite,” ”Satchmo,” and “Havana Night in Cuba.”
While Broadway was his main platform, Hines also showcased his talents in Coppola’s “The Cotton Club” and on television shows such as “Cosby,” “Eubie!” and “Love, Sidney.”
His impact extended beyond his own performances, as seen through his mentorship of young talent,
including teenage dancing brothers John and Leo Manzari.
Hines’ legacy lives on through the biographical documentary “Maurice Hines: Bring Them Back,” released in 2019.
