Maurice Hines, Legendary Tap Dancer of ‘The Cotton Club,’ Passes Away at 80

We are saddened to hear⁣ that actor, dancer, ‍and choreographer Maurice Hines,‌ who⁤ starred in “The Cotton Club,” has passed away at the ⁣age of 80.

The news of his death was reported by friends,‍ including Debbie Allen and John Manzari.

Hines’ career in tap dancing began at ⁣the young age of ‍5, leading ⁢to his Broadway debut in 1954. Alongside his brother ​Gregory, he ⁣embarked on a successful tour with their dancer father,⁤ appearing⁣ across the country⁢ and on TV shows.

After going ⁣solo, Hines found success in “Guys and Dolls” and “Eubie!” on Broadway, as well as choreographing and performing in⁢ other ‌shows such ​as “Uptown…It’s Hot!”, “Harlem Suite,” ⁣”Satchmo,” and “Havana⁢ Night‌ in Cuba.”

While Broadway was his main platform, Hines also showcased his talents in Coppola’s “The Cotton Club” and on television shows such as “Cosby,” “Eubie!” and “Love, ⁣Sidney.”

His impact extended beyond his own performances, as seen through his⁤ mentorship of young talent,​
including teenage dancing brothers John and Leo Manzari.

Hines’ legacy lives on through the biographical ​documentary “Maurice​ Hines: Bring Them Back,” released in 2019.
