Making Coffee Sustainable: Sucafina and CEE Develop Green Energy Coffee Roasting Plant

Belgium-based coffee company Sucafina and its subsidiary Beyers Koffie have teamed up with Belgian cleantech company CEE to create a coffee plant powered by green energy. The technology, which also uses 2.5 times less energy than the industry standard, is a game changer for sustainable coffee production.

CEO of CEE, Koen Bosmans, explained the traditional methods of roasting coffee using gas-fired batch roasters and the challenges of using renewable energy in this process. The technology they have developed aims to solve these issues by significantly reducing energy demand and stabilizing the process.

Green energy is sourced through a combination of on-site solar panels and green energy contracts in the case of Beyers Koffie. This fully electrified roasting technology can be connected to any source of green energy, making it an environmentally-friendly solution for coffee roasting.

The long-term goal of this project is to create a sustainable commodity in the coffee industry. Sucafina CEO Nicolas A. Tamari emphasized the importance of companies taking the lead in promoting responsible choices and the significant impact this technology can have on reshaping the coffee industry for the better.
