Google’s New Gemini: The GPT-4 Competitor with a Big Mystery

OpenAI’s ChatGPT stole the spotlight this year, but now Google’s own groundbreaking language model has entered the scene.

Google announced the launch of Gemini, its “most powerful” AI model yet, on Wednesday.

Gemini comes in three sizes, each tailored for specific tasks: Gemini Ultra, the largest and most powerful model; Gemini Pro, designed to scale across a wide range of tasks; and Gemini Nano, optimized for mobile use.

Google’s Gemini Pro outshined OpenAI’s GPT-3.5, company executives told CNBC. They avoided questions about how it compared to GPT-4.

Gemini will be integrated across consumer-facing products, powering tools such as Google’s Bard chatbot and enabling a more immersive Search Generative Experience.

Starting December 13, developers and business customers will be able to utilize the capabilities of Gemini Pro through the Google AI Studio and Cloud Vertex AI.

Beyond consumer use, Google envisions Gemini meeting a wide range of business needs — transforming customer service interactions, providing insightful product recommendations, and enabling businesses to identify market trends more effectively.

Furthermore, Gemini’s potential extends into creative realms; it could assist with content creation for advertising campaigns and blogging efforts, as well as provide productivity enhancements through meeting summarizations and structured code generation.

One of Gemini’s most impressive accomplishments is the Ultra model’s adept mastery of the MMLU, surpassing human experts in various subjects, from philosophy to medicine.

“It was built from the ground up to be multimodal, which means it can generalize and seamlessly understand, operate across, and integrate different types of information including text, code, audio, image, and video,” CEO Sundar Pichai wrote in a post on Wednesday.

Google remains tight-lipped about the monetization of these advancements. Recent tech reveals include the TPU v5p chip, designed to bolster the AI model training infrastructure and enhance performance at a more compelling cost point than predecessors.
