Details of the attack emerged when authorities responded to a 911 call reporting an attempted burglary at the church. Upon arrival, they found Gutgsell injured and a suspected assailant inside.
The individual, identified as Kierre L. Williams, was taken into custody. He has been charged with murder and using a weapon to commit a felony, according to Washington County Sheriff Mike Robinson.
This tragic event has shed light on Gutgsell’s controversial past, including a previous embezzlement conviction. Despite this, church leaders emphasized his remorse and commitment to seeking forgiveness.
