Bungie has officially confirmed that the release of The Final Shape, the highly anticipated expansion for Destiny 2, has been delayed from February 2024 to June 6, 2024.

The announcement comes after a period of turbulence at the company, including layoffs of over 100 employees. In response to the extended development timeline for The Final Shape, Bungie will be launching a new in-game event called Into the Light in April, which will span two months leading up to the release of The Final Shape.

According to a press release from Bungie’s staff, the delay is to allow for an “even bigger and bolder vision” for the expansion. The developer also plans to extend the current Season of the Wish event until the launch of The Final Shape in June, with added content to keep players engaged until the release of the new expansion.

The news of the delay follows closely on the heels of recent layoffs at Bungie, which affected multiple members of its community support team. Many players had anticipated a delay for The Final Shape, as it was reported by Bloomberg that the expansion had already been quietly delayed internally, along with the upcoming new IP Marathon. The reported reason for the layoffs was that the company was projected to be 45% below revenue forecasts for the year.

In a post earlier this month, the Destiny 2 dev team stated that they aimed to regain player trust by creating The Final Shape as “an extraordinary Destiny experience.” Other reported factors for the delay include declining player numbers for Destiny 2. The development team also acknowledged in the post that players had a mixed response to previous expansions. They explained, “Destiny needs to surprise and delight. We haven’t done this enough and that’s going to change.”
