Wordle continues to attract players to its daily English-language word puzzle following its release to the public in 2021. Have you tried it out yet?
New York-based software engineer Josh Wardle initially created the game as something for him and his partner to do during the COVID-19 lockdown and amassed a player base of millions within months. Talk about a homemade success story!
Wordle’s meteoric rise in popularity led The New York Times to step in and purchase the puzzle game for an undisclosed seven-figure sum in January 2022. It’s amazing how fast things can take off, isn’t it?
Part of Wordle’s success can be attributed to its simple gameplay loop where players try to solve the five-letter word in six attempts or fewer. It’s definitely addicting!
Players make use of a color-coded system to help them work out the word, with a green tile indicating the letter is correct and in the correct position, a yellow one means the letter is in the word but in the wrong place. If the letter is not in the word at all, the tile will turn gray. How’s your mastery of the colored tile system coming along?
The expert in applied linguistics, Erhan Aslan, gave some advice to Wordle players in a previous interview with Newsweek. So, heed the advice!
“One thing that I think is important in this game is the starting word chosen,” he said. “Starting off with words that include commonly used vowels, for example, e and a, consonants such as r and t, and sound sequences might be helpful.” Let’s apply the advice and make it a bit easier on ourselves, shall we?
“Choosing a word that starts with q, z, j, or x, for instance, may not be the best choice. As you get more feedback after a few guesses, users need to draw on some knowledge of phonics to narrow down or eliminate some words that they might be thinking.” Will those tips help you out?
