Christian Cage triumphed over his long-time friend, now bitter rival, Adam Copeland at AEW Dynamite in Montreal on Wednesday to successfully defend the TNT Championship.

Cage received a huge helping hand from Shayna Wayne, who made her way into the ring while both wrestlers were down and the referee was out cold. She took the TNT title belt and swung it, ultimately smacking Copeland with it.

Following that, Cage lifted Copeland up for the Killswitch to get the pin and the victory.

Copeland, known for his Hall of Fame career in WWE under the name Edge, made his AEW debut at the Oct. 1 WrestleDream pay-per-view after his WWE contract expired.

The 50-year-old veteran has since been a centerpiece, helping out in a match between Cage and Darby Allin to save Allin and Sting from an assault at the hands of Christian, Killswitch, and Nick Wayne.

In the following episode of Dynamite, Copeland explained his reasons for leaving WWE for AEW, noting that the primary reason was his desire to have one final run alongside Christian before retiring.

Copeland called Christian into the ring to discuss the possibility of teaming up, but Cage made it clear that it wasn’t something that interested him.

This set the stage for a massive six-man tag team match last month at Full Gear, in which Copeland, Allin, and Sting defeated Christian’s group, The Patriarchy.

Copeland and Cage didn’t go head-to-head in the match, as Christian abandoned his partners, creating more excitement for an eventual one-on-one match between The Rated-R Superstar and The Patriarch.

Given that Copeland and Cage are both from Canada, Copeland challenged Christian to a match in Montreal. Cage responded to the challenge recently, and while he tried to catch Copeland off guard before going for a low blow, Copeland saw it coming and delivered a low blow of his own.

As Edge and Christian, they are recognized as one of the greatest tag teams in professional wrestling history, having held the WWE Tag Team Championships together on seven occasions.

They also had numerous memorable matches against each other in WWE, but prior to Wednesday, they had not engaged in a singles match since an episode of Raw in 2010.

For many years, it seemed as though both Copeland and Cage were done wrestling for good, having retired due to neck and concussion concerns, respectively.

Both defied the odds to return to professional wrestling, and on Wednesday’s Dynamite, they competed in one of the most highly anticipated professional wrestling matches in recent memory.

Cage retained the TNT title,
