The award-winning director Ava DuVernay recently appeared as the final guest for 2023 on MSNBC’s “Politics Nation.” She discussed Nikki Haley’s Civil War “debacle,” her comments, and absence of reference to slavery, creating much controversy.
Reverend Al Sharpton, host of “Politics Nation,” prompted DuVernay to share her thoughts on Haley’s comments and her failure to clarify her statement.
“[T]he Nikki Haley debacle that we’re all experiencing,” the film director replied, referencing the responses to Haley’s controversial comments. “Either she didn’t know that slavery was the reason for the Civil War beginning or she doesn’t want to say and wants to kind of continue the lies of omission that have become the hallmark of her party,” DuVernay continued.
DuVernay added that the Republican Party “is thriving off the idea that you can take knowledge out of the public sphere and defend things that are unconscionable.”
She expressed that the ongoing litany of worrying comments should serve as a warning for everyone.
“I mean, they’re basically saying what they want to do and what they will do on what they’ve already done,” said DuVernay.
“My hope is that it is a wake-up call to the dangerous kind of deranged idea that history doesn’t matter anymore,” DuVernay concluded.
