Elon Musk has stirred up controversy by reinstating the X account of conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, following a social media poll on Twitter. Jones has faced backlash for previously referring to the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting as a hoax.
This move raises concerns for advertisers, who have pulled out from X due to concerns about hate speech. Musk’s decision is also notable as he is the latest controversial public figure to have their previously banned account reinstated.
Musk’s controversial decision came after he conducted a Twitter poll that revealed 70% of respondents favored Jones’ reinstatement. Musk later tweeted, “The people have spoken and so it will be.”
A few hours later, Jones’ posts reappeared, and he even retweeted a post about his video game. Jones and his Infowars show were permanently banned in 2018 due to violent behavior.
Defending his decision, Musk, who has described himself as a free speech absolutist, emphasized the importance of protecting free speech rights. He responded to a user’s argument about account bans being antithetical to free speech by agreed with the point.
Musk also suggested that Community Notes, a crowdsourced fact-checking service on X, would “respond quickly to any AJ post that requires correction.” This is a significant reversal for Musk, who had previously stated that he would not allow Jones back on the platform despite numerous calls to do so.
Addressing Jones’ controversial claims about the Sandy Hook shooting, several families of the victims have filed lawsuits against Jones, winning almost $1.5 billion in judgments against him. These families have testified about being harassed and threatened by Jones’ followers, who have accused them of being “crisis actors.”
Despite these legal actions, Jones continues to appeal the judgments, asserting that his speech was protected by the First Amendment. Reinstating Jones’ account comes as a significant move for Musk, as major brands have pulled their ads from X due to concerns about hate speech and extremist content
