Discover the latest information on various Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, norovirus, and Cryptosporidium outbreaks in multiple countries, as presented at the European Scientific Conference on Applied Infectious Disease Epidemiology (ESCAIDE).
Recent outbreaks in Turkey, Kazakhstan, and Portugal were discussed in detail, shedding light on important findings and insights.
One noteworthy incident occurred in January 2023, when 38 individuals experienced symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and facial flushing after consuming food at a factory in Turkey. Upon investigation, it was discovered that Bonito fish consumption was significantly associated with the illness, and environmental tests confirmed the presence of Bacillus cereus in prepared fish samples. Additionally, researchers identified potential histamine contamination in the fish, leading to the observed symptoms.
In another case, a delivery restaurant in Talgar, Kazakhstan, experienced an outbreak resulting in 71 hospitalized patients with gastroenteritis. A retrospective study revealed that certain food items, such as Caesar sushi, chicken pizza, and American style pizza, were linked to a higher risk of illness. Environmental inspections uncovered several food safety violations, leading to the temporary closure and sterilization of the restaurant.
Lastly, a high school in Cinfães, Portugal, reported an acute gastroenteritis outbreak, affecting 52 students who had lunch in the canteen. The investigation traced the origin of the outbreak to Staphylococcus contamination from a food handler, highlighting the importance of strict hygiene and safety measures in food preparation.
