Demolition Set for Three Caledonian Modular-built Schools

Two secondary schools in Haygrove School, Bridgwater, Somerset, and Sir Frederick Gibberd College, Harlow, Essex were both created by Caledonian Modular in a combined ₤ 38m offer.

However, SFG’s primary structure was required to close down after being open to students for less than 2 years due to concerns about its structural stability in extreme weather conditions like heavy snow or high winds.

Haygrove School also faced a similar fate as the Government discovered structural stability issues, leading them to declare the primary structure unusable by September.

Another school, Buckton Fields Primary School near Northampton, also met a similar fate and has now been condemned by the government.

All these schools were part of the Department for Education’s ₤ 3bn modular building scheme, established in 2020 to expedite construction and provide better value for money.

Baroness Barran, minister for the school system and student financing, announced that the department will be seeking construction specialists to demolish the sites and carry out a new build.

Additionally, two partially constructed primary schools in Cornwall, also built by Caledonian Modular before it went into administration in March 2022, were completely demolished due to construction issues revealed at both Launceston and Newquay primary school projects.
