This incredible redevelopment project is set to breathe new life into the iconic 1846 storage facility, designed by 6a architects. With planning permission and listed building consent secured, the ₤30m transformation of Tate Liverpool is officially a go!
The ambitious plans include a major renovation of the building to showcase the gallery’s global cultural significance and raise its profile on the dock.

Gilbert-Ash has been entrusted with the task of creating sweeping changes to the galleries, including breaking out floors, installing new lifts and stairs, and overhauling the building services and facade.

The design aims to reveal more of the building’s Victorian heritage through a new open-plan ground floor.
Raymond Gilroy, building director at Gilbert-Ash, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “We are pleased to have been chosen to deliver this landmark and transformational project at Tate Liverpool.”
“It is another unique opportunity to add to our extensive portfolio in the Cultural, Arts, and Heritage sector.
“Project Director, Rodney Coalter, who recently completed the National Portrait Gallery, London, will lead the team.

“The team is already in place, finalizing plans to tackle the many logistical and technical challenges that lie ahead, ahead of a start on site in early 2024.
“We are looking forward to establishing successful and collaborative relationships with both our new client at Tate Liverpool, the wider project specialist team, and to a very successful project delivery.”
