How One Family is Fighting to Protect Teen Girls from Deepfake Nudes

A story of resilience and determination is unfolding as a mother and her 14-year-old child advocate for better defenses for victims of deepfake images. The teenager and her female schoolmates were victims of AI-generated naked pictures being circulated at a high school in New Jersey.

Meanwhile, in Seattle, Washington, a teenage boy reportedly used synthetic intelligence to create and distribute similar images of his fellow students, mostly teenage girls. This alarming trend of AI-generated content damaging women and children is thriving online at an unprecedented rate.

Desperate for solutions, affected families are pushing for robust safeguards for victims whose images are manipulated using new AI models. They are also seeking federal regulations that can provide consistent protections across the country.

“We’re fighting for our kids,” said Dorota Mani, whose daughter was a victim in Westfield, New Jersey. “They just want to be loved, and they want to be safe.”

While the issue of deepfakes isn’t new, experts say it’s becoming more prevalent as the technology to create it becomes more accessible and easier to use. The FBI has continued to receive reports from victims whose images or videos were used to create explicit content shared online.

To combat this issue, several states have passed legislation criminalizing nonconsensual deepfake pornography, while others are working on their own laws, including New Jersey, where an upcoming bill aims to ban deepfake pornography and impose penalties on those who spread it.
