Update: American Hostage Among 16 Released in Israel-Gaza Conflict, Biden Announces

Exciting news! Ten Israeli hostages and four Thai captives were freed by Hamas and safely returned to Israel on Wednesday evening. This comes after the earlier release of two Russian Israeli citizens that same day. In exchange for the release of the hostages, Israel let go of 30 Palestinian prisoners, as confirmed by the Israel Prison Service. This development comes at a crucial time as pressure mounts on both Israel and Hamas to prolong the current pause in fighting. Although the pause is scheduled to end on Thursday, Israel is optimistic about securing an extension of “another two to three days,” according to an Israeli official who spoke to The Washington Post on the condition of anonymity. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has expressed the Biden administration’s desire for Israel to extend the pause as well, just before his planned trip to Israel and the West Bank. However, despite the pause, the Israeli official made it clear that it will not result in a permanent cease-fire. In fact, Israel remains steadfast in its goal to remove Hamas from its rule in Gaza.
