Hey there! Have you heard about the recent Google Drive issue? There’s a buzz on the Internet as Google investigates “sync problems” for Google Drive for desktop. It started when The Register shared a trending post from the Google Drive forums where users reported sudden vanishing of their Drive files, with one user even mentioning that their files reverted back to a state from May 2023! Google has acknowledged the issue and posted some guidelines to avoid potential file loss. Sounds like a real head-scratcher, right?
Google’s support post on the Drive forums is advising users not to take some specific actions, such as clicking “Disconnect account” within Drive for desktop, or deleting or moving the app data folder. The instructions aim to protect any possible file cache that may exist on your computer. It’s a little puzzling as to why this is happening, given that your files should still be available on the Drive web interface and could be downloaded from there. The issue might be even more complex as Drive for Desktop has two different operational modes, both of which could be causing problems. There’s the traditional “matching” mode and the newer “File Stream” mode. The defaults have changed to “File Stream,” which means that most files are not stored on your computer but are rather accessed as shortcuts from the cloud.
