The Risks and Rewards of Chatbot Therapy

When I first started feeling like I needed a therapist, I didn’t have the⁣ energy to start looking for one. Then, after months of putting it ⁣off, my doctor finally helped me‌ find a therapist. It took a whole year before⁣ I finally found someone who could help me ‍- and it was all thanks to a⁤ friend who was moving away who ‍gave ⁤me a recommendation.

I was fortunate ⁢enough to have health ⁢insurance ‍through my job, and I⁢ lived in an area with many therapists to choose from. Not everyone has these ‍resources, and it can be ⁤extremely challenging to find and afford mental health care.‍

Accessing mental health care is a nationwide issue, and⁣ it’s even more difficult due to the shortage of therapists ‍in⁣ the ⁤US. There are those who believe technology is the solution to this problem.

AI, or artificial intelligence, ‍is being used as a solution through AI chatbots like ChatGPT. Some users have found success using these chatbots as a form of therapy and have shared their experiences on social media.

However, it’s important to ⁤note that chatbots like ChatGPT are not a substitute for a real therapist. These chatbots don’t have to abide by‌ the same‌ privacy and ethical standards as human therapists, and can potentially ⁣cause harm by providing‌ inaccurate or⁣ dangerous ‍advice.

While AI has the potential to improve patient outcomes, it’s not as simple‌ as ‍just using a chatbot. Betsy Stade, a psychologist at the Stanford Institute ⁢for Human-Centered AI, is optimistic about the use of AI in therapy, but it’s a more complex issue than it may ⁣seem.

If you’re curious about where AI therapy is headed, or ⁢what it even involves, we have some answers for you.
