Reports indicate that Sunbo Angel Partners and Lighthouse, two prominent names in the South Korean automotive industry, are the main contributors to Lightyear’s latest funding round. While the exact investment figure from Lighthouse remains undisclosed, Sunbo has pledged a substantial 3.5 million euros to support Lightyear’s initiatives.
Despite these developments, it should be noted that this investment doesn’t necessarily signal a full-scale revival of Lightyear’s car production. Rather, the focus seems to be on Lightyear’s current aim of developing solar roofs for cars. This strategic move follows Lightyear’s recent decision to halt production of its original solar car model, shortly before declaring bankruptcy. However, the company has since reemerged in a leaner, restructured form, positioning itself for a fresh start in the burgeoning electric vehicle market.
A key turning point in this partnership was the meeting between Lightyear CEO Lex Hoefsloot and the two Korean companies at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas earlier this year. “This move also broadens our access to the strong South Korean automotive sector,” Hoefsloot commented, highlighting the potential synergies and opportunities set to be unlocked by the collaboration.
Sunbo Angel Partners, founded in 2016, has invested in over 120 technological ventures, particularly in areas concerning green energy, sustainability, and space technology. This aligns with Lightyear’s forward-looking vision and represents a significant step towards its growth trajectory.
