An Interview with Singer-Songwriter/Guitarist Malarie McConaha: Exploring “Empty Room,” Tone, and Guitars

Get ready for some amazing music from Franklin, Tennessee-based Americana outfit, The FBR! They’ve just released their new single, “Empty Room,” and it’s something you don’t want to miss. This track is lifted from their forthcoming album, Ghost, which is set to drop on January 19.

The band’s name – The FBR – was inspired by Leonard Cohen’s song, “Famous Blue Raincoat. Fronted by Malarie McConaha and Tim Hunter, who met a local bar, The FBR began life as an acoustic project, followed by burgeoning into a blues-roots Southern rock band.

If you’re wondering what role each band member plays, McConaha plays lead guitar and handles lead vocals, while Hunter plays acoustic guitar and harmonica. Both McConaha and Hunter do the songwriting.

With its bluesy, melancholic tones and highlighted by McConaha’s haunting vocals, “Empty Room” captures the aching sensation of dreadful loneliness.

What three things can’t you live without?

I can’t live without my friends/family, my instruments, and my dogs!

Why do you make music?

Music has become an essential part of my life. It keeps me going. There are times when words fail me, and in those moments, music helps me express myself and feel heard. It has been my lifeline since childhood, and I want to continue that tradition!

What inspired your new single, “Empty Room?”

‘Empty Room’ was inspired by the emotions I was going through and the need to express them in a healthier way. It was a result of a period of solitude where I learned to enjoy my own company again.

How, where, and when did you first connect with Tim Hunter?

We first met at an open mic night at Pucketts (now Fox & Locke) in Leipers Fork, Tennessee in 2014. We bonded over our love for Leonard Cohen and the rest is history,
