2024 Oscars Telecast to Kick off in Prime Time, Immediately Followed by ‘Abbott Elementary

Get ready movie buffs on the East Coast! The 96th Academy Awards, which ABC will broadcast on Sunday, March 10, 2024, will begin at 4 p.m. PDT / 7 p.m. EDT, earlier than ever before, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Thursday. This means that you’ll be able to catch all the action earlier than usual with a scheduled three to three and a half-hour run time, following a half-hour pre-show.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter the decision was driven by a desire to wrap the show within primetime hours on the East Coast, a time zone where there has historically been a dropoff in viewership as the evening progresses. This shift will allow movie lovers to enjoy the awards without staying up too late on a work night.

The 95th Oscars, hosted by ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel, was the highest-rated in three years with a significant number of viewers among adults 18-49. Now, with Jimmy Kimmel set to host the ceremony for the fourth time, ABC will air a new episode of the hit series Abbott Elementary, following the Oscars. Be sure to catch both offerings for an evening of entertainment.
