According to the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, the most recent round of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme has seen a threefold increase in applications after a significant boost in grant funding. The initiative, which offers households in England and Wales a grant of up to GBP 7,500 to switch to heat pumps, has been met with overwhelming interest.
Energy Security Secretary Claire Coutinho revealed that applications tripled in the first week after the grant increase, indicating a strong response from homeowners seeking to transition to low-carbon heating solutions.
The government’s goal with the program is to encourage homeowners to replace their traditional fuel-burning boilers with more efficient, low carbon heating systems, such as heat pumps and biomass boilers. The surge in applications for the latest round of the scheme demonstrates a growing enthusiasm for sustainable heating options.
From May 2022 to October 2023, over 10,000 boilers have been replaced with heat pumps, with a majority of these homes located in rural areas. The success of the program has prompted the government to extend it until December 2027, providing more families with the opportunity to make the switch to environmentally friendly heating.
