Age is just a number, as proven by 101-year-old Sarah Simpkins, the inspiring college student from South Carolina. Defying all odds, she is set to graduate alongside her granddaughter despite dropping out of college 81 years ago when she became a mother.
Despite having 11 children and being occupied by motherhood, Simpkins never lost the spark for knowledge. Years later, she decided to pick up where she left off and enrolled in college, completing her first semester in an early childhood education program.
With the support of her granddaughter, she is now attending classes, completing assignments, and engaging in discussions with classmates several generations younger than her. Despite her age, she is swiftly moving through the course with no challenges.
Thanks to the Virginia Higher Education Act of 1974, she is able to attend her classes for free, given that she is a senior over 60. This determined 101-year-old will proudly walk across the stage alongside her granddaughter in May 2024, symbolizing their shared commitment to education.
